In the 19th century, the Grensmaas took on a completely different appearance. By deepening the Meuse bed and diking, it changed from a wide river landscape with many stream channels into a narrow deep channel. It was hoped that this would make the Meuse navigable again and protect the villages. In 1993 and 1995, the river broke out of its straitjacket and caused flooding. As a result, the decision to give the Grensmaas more space again gained momentum. At the moment, both the Flemish and the Dutch side are working on river restoration. Due to the extraction of gravel and the removal or relocation of summer dikes, the Meuse is widening again and can safely use its stream bed. Hopefully, the small islands will soon attract the attention of common terns and the open areas will be incubated by the European protected corncrake.
