Eighty percent of the timber edges and hedgerows that you still find around the grasslands and fields in Langeren are already indicated on a map from 1878 (Carte Dépot de la Guerre). This capital of small landscape elements has everything to do with the former way of working: we looked at what horse and plow could handle in a day. Because the wood edges and hedgerows are centuries old, they are the 'hotspots' for old forest plants such as the king fern, double leaf and fishing rod. But also small mammals, insects and the live lizard feel at home here. It is not for nothing that Limburgs Landschap vzw, together with the Flemish Land Agency (VLM) and the city of Maaseik, restored or replanted a lot of old wood edges in 2010.
