In 1968, Jempi Monseré fulfilled part of his military service here. He was almost the only Flemish person among all the French speakers. That year, he won the national championship for soldiers on the road. As a militiaman, Jempi enjoyed relatively much freedom. He only had to peel potatoes: "one side with skin, the other without. He just did what he liked," said sister Marie-Claire. He was selected for the Olympic Games in Mexico and finished 6th there.
