Over the centuries, some roads were worn so deeply by agricultural traffic and drainage that they came to be below the level of the landscape. This creates a road that is sometimes up to 10 meters deeper than the landscape. Most of the sunken roads originated in the late Middle Ages. The contrast of a sunken road with the surrounding landscape is great. It is difficult for sun and wind to penetrate; The deeper location and the trees and shrubs give a hollow road an almost forest-like atmosphere. The steep side walls are therefore habitat for special plants, such as valuable fern, yellow dead nettle and yellow avenna. Badger burrows can often be found a bit above the road in the steep side walls.
