The nature reserve owes its name to the Demer, which runs right through this area. This river has its source in Ketsingen, a borough of Tongeren. In Bilzen, the river bends to the west and reaches the Dyle together with the water from many tributaries. Via the Dyle and then the Rupel and the Scheldt, the water flows into the North Sea.
