Until about 1860, the Stamprooierbroek and 't Hasselterbroek were part of a large wetland area, which was called the Urlobroek. The Abeek flowed into a bowl and was locally up to a kilometer wide. The Belgian state then ordered municipalities to drain large marshes such as this, in order to make them suitable for agriculture or forestry and thus combat food shortages. If the municipalities could not or did not want to do that, they had to sell their property to private individuals who took over the extraction. In 1865, the marshes along the Dutch border came into the hands of the 'Banque Générale pour favoriser l'Agriculture et les Travaux publics'.
