In the slightly drier 't Hasselterbroek, Konik horses and Galloway cattle are used to take over the role of roe deer, red deer, wild boar, cattle and horses. With the exception of roe deer, wild boar and a few escaped red deer, all those large wild grazers have long since disappeared from the region. Their almost-wild successors are now taking over the work within the grids.
Through their eating behaviour, they create a beautiful and rich variety of plant growth and associated animals. This creates a mosaic landscape. Together with the forest, the 't Hasselterbroek nature reserve is to become a complex in which grazers roam and in which there are woods and thickets as well as open spaces with heathland.
Petting and feeding the Konik horses and Galloway cattle is out of the question: the animals are not short of anything and would otherwise become too intrusive with other walkers. Keeping your distance is recommended, but there is no need to panic. Dogs must of course be kept on a leash.
