It's not just nature that benefits from marsh restoration. The water from heavy rainfall is also given more space, has to travel a longer way and is held up by the rough new stream bed and the growing forest. All this slows down the water drainage and thus prevents flooding further downstream in villages or towns. Such a flowing swamp is immediately attracted to special plants and animals after construction – snipe, greenshanks and, in rougher places, even the rare corncrake.
