The Bowls

The Kompen, after komp, a dialectical distortion of bowl, as the area is in a small depression. Farmhouse of the elongated type, shaded by a recent cobbled driveway, hedged on the street side with hornbeam and shaded by a few old trees, including an oak and a beech, with ordinance: cross barn-stable-dwelling house with double house elevation; originally six, now seven bays and one storey under a gable roof (ridge parallel to the street, Flemish tiles), in core possibly dating back to the second half of the 16th century, in any case already built in brick before 1619 and raised later, with traces of wickerwork in the right side gable. On the Ferraris map (1771-77) it is indicated as an elongated building and in the Atlas of the Neighbourhood Roads (1845) as a whole consisting of two parallel parts. From the 17th century inhabited by Teuten. In the first half of the 19th century, farm and inn, indicated on a map of around 1850 as the Halve Maen (Cab[ine]), where cabin stands for shelter or stopping place for travellers, carters and peddlers.
