The wood bank, an earthen bank on which mainly woody crops grow, was for the poor farmer a place to gather firewood. In addition, this enclosure served a purpose as livestock protection, as in areas with common pastures, one had to protect the crops from stray animals.
Due to the large variety of shaded and sunnier spots, an incredible number of different plant and animal species can be found. From top to bottom, we encounter trees, bushes (often thorny: livestock protection), ferns, herbs, and mosses. Climbing plants find their way through here towards the light. In the treetops, raptors find a resting and lookout place. Other birds look for nesting places in wood banks or enjoy the berries in the autumn. Small mammals, such as martens and bats, use wood banks as a point of orientation during their movements. For amphibians, there is enough shade and humidity.
