The forests that arise spontaneously along the banks of the Maas and the Maasplassen are riparian forests. Willows and black poplars are adapted to a life near the water. They tolerate being under water for long periods of time with their feet and their seeds spread easily via the wind and water. Here, at the Kessenichplas, such a softwood forest was created within a few years after the gravel was cleared. There is a chance that oaks will germinate naturally in drier places and a hardwood forest will develop along the Meuse.
