Border triangle (Côte des Trois Bornes)

The ascent of the border triangle via the Belgian side is also known as Côte des Trois Frontières, or the Côte des Trois Bornes, or the Vaalserberg-West. In any case, it is the most beautiful side of the Drielandenpunt to climb: since a few years the road surface is in good condition again, it is much quieter in terms of traffic than on the Dutch side, and the road has two hairpin bends where many trees were cut down at the beginning of 2015 so that you can enjoy the views in the climb.

Incidentally, in earlier years (from 1816 to 1920) the Three-Country Point was a Four-Country Point, when after the fall of Napoleon the Netherlands and Prussia could not agree on a valuable zinc mine near the town of Kelmis in the former municipality of Moresnet. Thus the small state of Neutral Moresnet was founded, which came under the supervision of Dutch, Belgian and Prussian commissioners.
