In the 15th century, Bruges was a thriving trade city. Thanks to wealthy merchants and the support of the Burgundian nobility, Bruges became an inspiring meeting place for numerous artists, particularly the Flemish Primitives, such as Jan Van Eyck and Hans Memling. Their work influenced painting styles across Europe. Their masterpieces and other top collections can be admired in the Groeningemuseum, the St. John's Hospital, the St. Salvator Cathedral, the Our Lady's Church, and the many other museums in Bruges.
