On the left side of the Broekstraat, just before the exit to Oudendijk, there are bunkers. They belong to the bunker line that was built by the Germans during the First World War. These bunkers had to protect against a possible rear attack by the Allies. After a landing in the Netherlands, the Allies could easily recapture Antwerp. The German defence was therefore based on the piercing of the Scheldt dikes. The water would flood the polders as far as the Broekstraat. After that, these bunkers had to take over the defense.
