Old forest, castles and parks of Nieuwenhoven, Nonnemielen, Spinveld, Terkelen, Nieuwerkerken and K

This area encompasses a rich and varied heritage: an ancient forest complex owned by the Abbey of St. Trudo, interspersed with castles and parks of Nieuwenhoven, Nonnemielen, Spinveld, Nieuwerkerken, Terkelen, and Kortenbos, the farms Schorrebos and Casselaer, and the Metsterenmolen. Geographically, this region belongs to the outskirts of Sint-Truiden, located 5 km north of the city center. The area is sparsely built, with few roads and well-provided with heritage sites and relics. Until the 18th century, forests were present on the higher ridges between river valleys, which have mostly disappeared now. Only in the vicinity of Nieuwenhoven did a fairly large forest complex remain. This forest, in combination with Nieuwenhoven, the medieval abbey estate of the Abbey of St. Trudo, forms the core of the area proposed here.
