The area "Valleys of Mombeek and Fonteinbeek with the castle and forest of Kolmont" lies at the transition between wet and dry Haspengouw. Locally, clear elevation differences and variations in landscape types are evident due to the incision of the streams. The valleys themselves have an asymmetrical shape and are characterized by the presence of meadows and hayfields, often utilized for nature today. Land use in the valleys contrasts with the higher grounds where open fields or small-scale orchards near home plots predominate. Tufa deposits can be found in the valleys. The most striking heritage element is the 12th-century castle of Kolmont belonging to the counts of Loon. Today, it is a ruin, with the keep still relatively well preserved, surrounded by a historic forest complex. The former fruit railway between Drieslinter and Tongeren cuts through the area and has a spatial structuring effect on the surroundings.
