Hollow road to Ulvend

Near the hamlet of Kwinten, a road leads eastwards to the plateau on the main road to Ulvend. The first part of the road, also known here as 'Waterwegske', is semi-paved and very wet due to the numerous springs that originate here such as the captured Kole spring whose water flows right over the road. The spring water 'mops' the floor of the road here. These springs were created here as a result of the incision of the hollow road, in places where the closing loam has been washed away by erosion. The moist road cuts deeper and runs as an aquifer hollow road between roadsides with coppice of ash and hazel, woodcress and poplar. Higher on the plateau, the road is less eroded and winds like unpaved road between meadows with hawthorn hedges and ascending ash. Here the road offers open views of Sint-Martens-Voeren and the parish church and eventually ends up at the level of a tree chapel at the road to Ulvend. On historical maps this road is shown as the main road from Sint-Martens-Voeren to Ulvend. Possibly this road was eventually abandoned because of the difficult accessibility and wet context.
