The lower course of the Zwarte Beek flows from Meldert (Lummen) in a south-westerly direction, to merge past Zelem (Halen) into the valley of the Demer. It only merges with it near Diest. The stream meanders here between higher and higher witness hills, shrinking a few times to a narrow ribbon of hay and pastures, then expanding again to a wider zone, depending on the space left by the hills with a substrate of iron sandstone.
