A figurative map of the Land of Aalst by Jacques Horenhault, dating from the end of the 16th century, depicts an old village pond to the northeast of the castle grounds. Around 1925, the Cantaert villa was built on a part of the site where the pond was located – on the side of the Bettelhovebeek facing the city centre – and the accompanying garden was laid out. The remaining plots of the former pond site were respectively closed off on three sides and largely occupied by commercial buildings.
