Little is known about older law or town halls. In 1792, the vierschaar met in the inn 'Het klein kasteel' on the village square, possibly the same location as the current town hall. Neo-Gothic building from 1895, designed by architect Jean-Eduard Bouwens (Mechelen 1840 – Dendermonde 1897). Architect Bouwens was city architect of Dendermonde since 1862 and also a teacher at the Academy of that city. He received his training from his father Franciscus-Johannes, who was also city architect of Mechelen and taught at the academy where Jean-Eduard also studied. He completed his training in Nijvel and became city architect of Diest in 1859 and director of the Diest academy. Five of his projects are included in the Inventory of Architectural Heritage.
