The Turnhout bleaching industry originated in the hamlet of Heizijde in 1654 on the initiative of Peter Van de Venne and Jan Theeus (see economic revival after the Peace of Münster, 1648); in 1664 it was owned by Steven Joosten, and in 1707 it was handed over to the Stadhouders-Joosten families.
