The St. Bernard Abbey of Bornem was founded in 1603 by Pedro Coloma, lord of Bornem, and had a turbulent history at the time of the French Revolution.
You will find a beautiful library, one of the most important heritage libraries in the province of Antwerp. The collection contains more than 34,000 works, including a significant number of manuscripts, incunabula, post-incunabula and a number of old prints on Saint Bernard and the Cistercian Order.
The richness and organization of the library are largely due to the knowledge and commitment of Father Van Doninck. After studying theology at the University of Innsbruck in Austria, he was appointed subprior of the abbey and from 1895 was charged with the care of the archives and library.
The war chronicle written by Father Van Doninck gives us a unique view of the events during the war years.
