The site was the logical choice for the construction of a fortification: a height protruding into the Meuse valley, the easternmost spur of the middle terrace of the Meuse. Originally, the Meuse flowed at the foot of it. The surroundings of the castle and the church were already inhabited in the Iron Age; finds from the Roman period confirm the habitation of the site during this period.
