The Lixhe fish ladder is part of the "Salmon 2000" project, the aim of which is to reintroduce salmon and sea trout into the Meuse basin (an operation launched as part of the European Year of Nature Conservation in 1995). The scale reduces the physical barrier to migration posed by the dam and hydroelectric power plant, both in the direction of descent to the sea and in the direction of ascent to the river during the breeding season.
Indeed, the sustainable restoration of highly migratory fish in the Meuse basin imperatively requires the development of effective crossing structures at the level of the dams in order to restore or preserve the free movement of these migrants. Fish Ladder 2
Ladders therefore allow fish to overcome obstacles on a watercourse.
