The parish was first mentioned in writing in 1157, when Pope Adrian IV transferred the tithe right to the chapter of Our Lady in Maastricht. In 1366 the church was destroyed by fire. In 1467, in addition to the tithe right, the right of patronage was also granted to the chapter of Our Lady.
The oldest parts of the present church probably date from the 16th century, with the choir being the oldest, and the north transept arm slightly younger. In 1679 a fire broke out. After restoration, the aisles were demolished in 1769-1770 and rebuilt in classical style. From 1846-1852, the Romanesque nave, the Gothic tower and the side aisles were demolished. Tower and nave were rebuilt in neo-Gothic style. The south transept arm was also demolished and rebuilt. The north chapel and north transept arm were preserved.
