In Halen, the Black Devils are held in high regard. That name does not refer to some contemporary sports team, but to the legendary Compagnie Eerste Cyclisten (also Carabiniers-Cyclists) that played a heroic role during the Battle of the Silver Helmets in Halen on August 12, 1914. During this battle, the Belgian army won its only victory over the Germans. This cycling Company caused so many problems for the German opponent that he called them schwarze Teufel. The companies of cyclists-carabiniers were founded in 1898 and disbanded after the First World War. These soldiers also played an important role during the battles on the Yser.
