In the Maaspark Negenoord (140 hectares), gravel exploitation theoretically ended in 2005. The gravel pit is now a nature development area. Then there is the Kerkeweerd nature reserve (40 hectares). Here, gravel extraction had already been stopped. The management of the area is in the hands of the Limburg Landscape Foundation, which outsources part of its work to Galloway cattle and Konik horses.
