In the year 967, Brustem was already mentioned, then still called Brustemia, a Germanic term that can be translated as "dwelling on a small hillock". Naturally, it was not about the hill on which the ruins of the citadel stand, as it is artificial. The citadel tower was built in 1171 on the orders of Louis of Looz, who was at war with Saint-Trond.
