From an account of the year 1187, drawn up for the Count of Flanders, we know that at that time a large swamp area stretched in the vicinity of Aardenburg. Later sources showed that this area, with a lot of peat in the subsoil, included the entire parish of Sint-Laureins. Margaret of Constantinople gave permission to excavate this peat in the second half of the 13th century. At the same time, the repeated floods also contributed more than their share to giving this agricultural area its contemporary shape. Today you will be introduced to a landscape in which both the violence of nature and the struggle of man against it left their mark. In this landscape of creeks and dikes you will also discover a lot about human creativity. The story of Reynaert de Vos is also often situated here. Here and there in the five villages that make up Sint-Laurens, you will find figures from this story.
