In 1992, the last mine of the Benelux closed its doors in Zolder. Yet, it was the first place where the protected buildings received a new purpose. They remain, together with the Monnoyerschouw (the flue of the boiler house), the Shaft Tower, and the Hoisting Engine House, visible relics of 'black gold'. The bathhouse now houses the Center for Sustainable Building. The Central was skillfully restored. The Watt room captures the imagination. In 2012, the restoration of the Hoisting Building began: here will come 'The Floor', a multifunctional building with space for a passive school, a classified visitor area, the Atrium, and spaces for commercial and/or industrial activities. The administrative main building has largely retained its function but is now used for other businesses. Every second and fourth Wednesday afternoon of the month, a multicultural market takes place at the Market Square.
