The Abeek has its source in the heathland of Meeuwen-Gruitrode and flows between the Donderslagheide and the Maas. The catchment area of this stream includes the Donderslagbeek, the Gielisbeek, the Hommelbeek, the Bullenbeek and the Brijvennerbeek.
Together with its tributaries, the Abeek has excavated a gently undulating landscape. No waste water is discharged into it, hence the water quality is excellent. The stream is therefore listed as one of the better Flemish fishing waters. Traditionally, the inhabitants have made use of the water power of the stream. The first watermills were built before the 16th century. Some stayed
preserved, albeit in a rebuilt state.
