In the life of the noble Catherine, miracles accumulated. Now she is remembered in many places, including in Maaseik.
The young Catherine was ordered by emperor Maxentius to renounce her faith in Christ, but did not let it get to her and refused.
Instead, she converted fifty of the king's philosophers to Christianity. In many images, Emperor Maxentius is literally and figuratively at her feet.
Because of her mystical marriage, she is also the protector of all people who wear a wedding ring. It is claimed that the baby Jesus himself put a ring on her finger, because she wanted him as a husband.
As a protector of noble ladies, she is certainly no stranger to this region. The Catherine altar in Susteren is already known as far back as the documentation of Susteren goes.
Catharina is also honoured in Maaseik, Belgium, by means of a special silver statue in baroque style, which honours her wonderful life. The church itself, with its striking copper-green tower and beautiful stucco, is also an absolute must.
