The Steenstraat is an old street running through several municipalities in West Flanders. The road dates back to Roman times. It was an ancient connection road (diverticulum) between Kassel in Northern France and Aardenburg in present-day Zeelandic Flanders. The road possibly existed before Roman times and was straightened and paved by them, or it was newly constructed after the sea's transgression. The paved road remained in existence for centuries.
