In 1973, construction began on what was to become a replacement for the old Prison Saint-Léonard in Liège, which dates back to 1851. In 1979, this prison, which is one of the largest in Belgium, was opened. The Prison Saint-Léonard was hit by a strike by the guards six months before the inmates were to be transferred to Lantin, which the prisoners took advantage of by starting a mutiny. This led to escapes and destruction within the prison. Eventually, this prison was demolished from 1982 to 1983. A park and a square were established on the former prison site.
