The Schulensbroek is a nature reserve north of Herk-de-Stad, west of Schulen and south of Linkhout. The area measures about 200 ha. The area is European protected as part of Natura 2000 area 'Demer Valley'.
It has traditionally been a flood plain of the Demer. It was used as a hay meadow and was fertile, as it was flooded by the Demer for several months a year. In the 70s of the 20th century, the Schulensmeer was created as a water storage facility. Part of the area, together with the lake, is surrounded by dikes and can therefore flood.
