You're in the middle of the Brussels district of Matonge. This is a district where people from Brussels with African roots tend to meet and shop.
The emergence of this district began with the founding of La Maison Africaine, in the early 1960s. This organisation in Elzas-Lotharingenstraat (Rue d’Alsace-Lorraine) accommodates Congolese and other African students. Prior to Congolese independence in 1960 there were also many colonial bars in this district, where people returning from Congo met and did business. This caused the district to become a colonial hub in the back garden of the Royal Palace.
The route continues along the Elsensesteenweg (Chaussée d’Ixelles), which was recently rid of traffic. A great improvement for cyclists and pedestrians!
