The dune strip west of Mariakerke was a beloved place of the painter James Ensor. He was often seen there and had a permanent place to work. He made various drawings and etchings there, and also painted the oil painting "View of Mariakerke". Ensor advocated for the protection of the dune strip during his time. As a miracle, the strip that reaches from Mariakerke to Middelkerke, and is only interrupted by the small Raversijde, has survived. It is the only remaining open dune strip of the mid coast. It probably would not have happened if the dune church for which James Ensor fought so hard had not endured.
