This offshoot of the Forest de Soignes has a rich cycling history. The installation of the Louizalaan (Avenue Louise) in the second half of the 19th century made it easy to reach the woods at Ter Kamerenbos. It soon became a popular spot with the wealthy in Brussels for a stroll or cycle ride.
The Longchamps Velodrome, designed by the Brussels architect Victor Taelemans, opened in this area in 1893. For 30 years it formed the finishing line of the Paris-Brussels cycle race. In 1897, it was joined by the Ter Kameren Velodrome, which quickly became an important gathering place for Brussels’ cyclists. Nowadays, the annual Le 24H Vélo du Bois de la Cambre is held here, a cycling festival involving thousands of scouts. The amateur competition BXL Tour starts and ends here as well.
