The Alouette quarry is located in Calestienne, 1.5 km south of Hotton. The site actually consists of two contiguous abandoned quarries, one of Couvinian sandstone and the other of Givetian limestone. The contact zone of these two geological layers combined with a remarkable diversity of rocks explains the presence of vegetation and flora of great interest, including a very rich population of orchids. The local fauna has only been partially inventoried so far, but preliminary results suggest a particularly high potential for diversity, especially regarding day butterflies, which are represented by at least 32 species. The site has been designated as a state nature reserve since 2012, covering an area of approximately 6 hectares.
