The Duinenkerk meant so much to Ensor that he wanted to be buried there as well. The artist, who had often mocked the Catholic Church and never attended a church service, still managed to reach an agreement with the parish during his lifetime. In exchange for a burial plot, he would accept a church service. By the end of his life, the painter was such a celebrated citizen that both the church and the city were more than happy to organize an official ceremony that would resonate. Ensor found his grave in 1949. Ostend gained a new tourist attraction, and the church has since had an unofficial name added, the Ensor Church.
