The marina Het Gevaer is well sheltered in a green and quiet setting and has various facilities for passers-by. If the weather is good, you are welcome in the canteen during the weekend.
The Dessel-Turnhout-Schoten canal was dug between 1844 and 1875 to increase prosperity in the region.
The poor, sandy soils of the Kempen were irrigated with the calcareous water from the Meuse and the industry was revived by new means of transport by water between Liège and Antwerp. During the digging, they came across a layer of clay that resulted in the industrialization of the region. Several brick and tile factories were established along the canal. Unfortunately, these have been lost. The canal is currently heavily trafficked by pleasure yachts and canoes. Along the banks it is wonderful to walk, cycle and horseback ride.
