Hollow way

A hollow way is created by a combination of natural erosion processes and human use, usually in areas with relief (slopes) and soils that are sensitive to erosion, such as clay, sandy loam, or marl. The process proceeds as follows:

Centuries of use of the same path, particularly by foot traffic, livestock, and later carts, constantly loosens soil.

Rainfall washes this loosened soil away from the path, especially on sloping parts of the landscape.

After many years, the roadway becomes increasingly deeply carved in relation to the surrounding land, sometimes by several meters.

Important factors for its formation are: steepness of the terrain (at least 2-4%), a soil that can maintain steep walls (such as clay), and intensive historical use as a connecting road for agriculture or transport.

For a hollow way of about 5m deep, assuming an average situation with intensive historical use and sensitive soil, an age of around 500 to 1,000 years is realistic. The exact duration depends on usage intensity, type of arable farming, and soil type.

Historical sources indicate that most deep hollow ways in the Netherlands and Belgium were formed between the late Middle Ages and the 19th century, thus a period of roughly 500 to 800 years.
