Memorial forest in Haacht (Wespelaar)
The forest consists of eighteen species of trees and shrubs including: the sessile oak, the winter lime, the black alder and the white willow, the smooth elm, holly woodcress and the European bird cherry.
One winter lime has a special function, it is a peace tree. Linden used to symbolize the feminine in nature. According to the Germans, Freya, goddess of fertility, love and justice, lived in the linden tree. When the Germans founded a new settlement around the beginning of our era, they first looked for a place for a londe. Only then did they build their huts, preferably around the tree.
Wespelaar suffered greatly during the First World War. Not only soldiers, but also civilians were killed. Even today there is a war somewhere in the world. War brings pain, sadness, anger and powerlessness. With the forest we commemorate the First World War and the victims.
