For centuries, heath was the most defining type of vegetation in the area. The heath was grazed by sheep. Here lived the 'heath men', often in no more than a hut. The poverty was so acute that the inhabitants collected 'ant eggs' to sell them in the city to enthusiasts who kept birds.
