In 1972, the VMW built a large concrete reservoir in the IJzerbroeken, near the De Blankaart nature reserve: it is octagonal in shape and 120 football fields (60 ha) in size. It can hold 3 million m³ of water: more than enough to supply a third of the coastal province with drinking water every day. That water is pumped up from the IJzer and the surrounding watercourses and treated into tasty and healthy drinking water in the water production center next to the center. Powerful pumps then send it through the water pipes to the taps at home.
