A careful walker will certainly notice the bishop's staff on the church tower of Wulvergem. This staff is the symbol of the patron saint St. Machutus, a saint who came from Ireland to the mainland in the 6th century. The legend tells that Machutus, the patron saint of Wulvergem, stopped with his companions on an island to celebrate mass. After the mass, they noticed they had landed on the back of a whale. This whale lies in all its glory, immortalized in stone by Willem Vermander at the village reception point of Wulvergem.
