Richard Depoorter was born in Ichtegem in 1915. He was a successful cyclist, including two victories in the oldest Belgian classic: Liège-Bastogne-Liège, also called La Doyenne. But he died much too young. In 1948 he was the Belgian best hope for a victory in the Tour de France. During the Tour de Suisse, however, he died after crashing under mysterious circumstances in the Sustenpas tunnel. Photo: Collection WieMu Roeselare.
