The imposing St. Martin's Church appears for the first time in historical sources in 1112. Originally, it was a Romanesque building with an eight-sided tower in Tournai bluestone. Over the centuries, this was expanded into the impressive five-aisled church that dominates the market of Beveren today.
The important lords of Beveren patronized the church. The 16th-century copper tombstone of Adolf of Burgundy, lord of Beveren, bears witness to this. Joos Vijd's parents, castle warden Clais Vijd and Amelberga Van der Elst, founded the chapel of the Holy Spirit in the church. St. Martin's Church is named after the patron saint of Beveren, St. Martin of Tours. On November 11, he still visits the Beaver children to hand out sweets and treats.
