Nature reserve De Handzamevallei

Especially the Handzamebroek (between Barisdam and Handzame), where the Handzamevaart still meanders, exerts a strong attraction on waterfowl and waders. This area is not directly influenced by the pumping stations and still floods quite regularly over an area of several dozen hectares. The valley is much more than a wintering area for waterfowl. It is also a valuable area for numerous birds of prey. During the breeding season, the valley is important for many species. In addition to birds, the typical plants of a valley area are very dependent on that water. Nowadays, especially the large fox tail and its relative, the bent fox tail, are defining aspects. The fox tail is an early-flowering grass species that turns the fields from cream white to purple in May and June.
