The street names Brandhoutkaai, Baksteenkaai and further on Steenkoolkaai, Schuitenkaai… refer to the old Brussels inner harbor. After the filling in of this Koopliedendok, a large covered fish market stood here from 1885 to 1955. This is why this square is still colloquially known as ‘the Fish Market’. The restaurants with neon lobsters and the basins with water spouts are a nod to the vanished past.
This neighborhood has come alive in recent years, with countless cafés, restaurants, a bio-supermarket, and chocolatiers. For the very popular ice cream from Gaston, you still have to walk a bit further to the Anspach Fountain. On nice days there is a long line, but patience is rewarded!
Under the square is the metro station Sint-Katelijne, just two stops from Central Station. On foot, it’s about a fifteen-minute walk.
